1994
IT STARTS IN A LAB COAT
An emergency physician finishes his residency in Chicago in 1993, keeps his drug notes handwritten in a lab coat pocket, and starts typing them into a PalmPilot.
2001
WHAT PEPID STANDS FOR
It is an acronym, and the 2001 splash screen spells it out: Portable Emergency and Primary Care Information Database. Almost nobody knows that. 1,400 drugs by then, and 4,000+ search terms — misspellings included, because nobody types carefully at 3 a.m.

THE PITCH THAT STUCK
“A comprehensive portable reference supporting your clinical decisions in every phase of patient care.” That is the 2005 banner talking, on a Sony CLIÉ. Change the device and the sentence still holds.
